Soner Tarim of Unity School Services is no longer the contract CMO provider for LEAD Academy #Gulen

Soner Tarim Unity School Services Contract With LEAD Academy #Gulen from Gulen Cemaat Montgomery's first charter school faces yet another hurdle as the education service provider for LEAD Academy ceased operations at the school several months ago. Unity School Services, a Texas based non-profit, signed a five-year contract with LEAD to provide services that are similar to a central office, including completing the school's payroll, ensuring compliance standards are met and conducting student assessments. Board President Charlotte Meadows confirmed Tuesday morning that Unity stopped providing services to the school around early December. "It’s not totally clear what's going on but they have decided to pull their operations from LEAD Academy almost two months ago," Meadows said. According to the contract with Unity, the company was being paid 13% of all gross revenue (federal, state and local) received during the school year, equaling about $30,000 a ...

Education Matters by Alabama educational expert Larry Lee #WoodlandPreparatory #Gulen

Many great articles and facts about Woodland Preparatory and Alabama Education by Larry Lee Some great examples of his educational reporting in Alabama Woodland Preparatory doing things the wrong way My  last post  was about University charter school on the campus of the University of West Alabama.  As I wrote about the methodical approach they took to building public support, about the $350,000 they had pledged to the school before they applied to the state for approval and about the success they have achieved so far, it was impossible not to compare this undertaking to the to the unmitigated mess that has taken place with Woodland Prep in Washington County. There is simply no comparison.  One is daylight, the other is dark. Nor could I take my mind off the fact that in the eyes of the state charter school commission, these two efforts are considered as equals. So let’s make some comparisons: The initial impetus for University charter came from t...

Soner Tarim and the telling story about a charter school controversy in a rural Alabama county #Gulen #WoodlandPreparatory

https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2019/05/03/telling-story-about-charter-school-controversy-rural-alabama-county/?fbclid=IwAR04YZLfVvH7AdPBICx5sTLkiStOfhpdTtIfln3LyH32ceeiHHNouh5PveM&utm_term=.f99f9d1a602f This is a story about a loud and rather unlikely controversy in a sleepy rural Alabama county over the establishment of a charter school. While the specifics are unique to Washington County, the narrative is being repeated in states throughout the country. And the episode helps explain why the nearly 30-year-old charter movement in this country is facing a backlash even as Education Secretary Betsy DeVos continues to promote it. In Alabama’s Washington County, a charter called Woodland Preparatory School has been approved by state officials to open even though: The mayor of the town where it will be located says he doesn’t want it and doesn’t know anybody who does. A national organization that evaluates charter school applications gave the thumbs-down on Woodla...
